137/365: music to the ears

Saturday February 12th

Today (and yesterday) here in the European Capital of Culture 2011 the symphony orchestra brought the music to the people of Turku and played in the shopping centre. Crowds gathered and it was great though it wasn’t appreciated by everyone*!

no, no, nono, no, no!

The finale was Jean Sibelius’ Finlandia, to which these wonderful words have been set.

Be still, my soul: the Lord is at your side;
bear patiently the cross of grief and pain;
leave to your God to order and provide;
in every change He faithful will remain

Be still my soul: your best, your heavenly friend,
through thorny ways, leads to a joyful end

The actions of this little girl (*face blurred on purpose!) reminded me that there are times when we deliberately cover our ears to avoid hearing (or listening to) the voice of God. Like Jonah. Fortunately God gives us many chances to hear and obey Him …
