163/365: pretzels and ashes

I had the possiblity to attend the Ash Wednesday service over in Kennington before I left London yesterday. It was very moving. At the beginning of the sermon every participant was handed a Pretzel and the priest explained that it symbolised arms of love : love of God, love of neighbour, love of self.

The OT reading was from Isaiah 58 (which talks about what a true fast is) and in it is the wonderful phrase

you shall be called the repairer of the breach, the restorer of streets to live in

And we were reminded that to be Christian is to take up that mantle and work together with God for love peace and justice in our streets!
