Meet Maria

Maria is Spanish. Her husband is Swedish. They live in England.

Maria is walking part of the Camino in very short stages because of her knees – and she’s having her luggage taxied on on every stage. Her husband is currently on the very demanding Camino del Norte which goes from Irun – where I walked through on Monday – to Santiago de Compostela (via Gijon)

I met Maria last night before the Pilgrims’ dinner in Roncesvalles. She told me where she was staying tonight in a teeny weeny village called Linzoain about 8km before Zubiri)

The owner of Posada El Camino, Carmen, doesn’t speak English so Maria phoned on my behalf and got me a bed for the night. When I got there today it turns out Maria and I are sharing a lovely twin room. We have real sheets and towels, and it feels very luxurious.

We were able to use the spinner for our washing and Carmen consulted Maria as to what we will have for our pilgrims’ dinner tonight.

Maria was at the pilgrims’ mass last night in Roncesvalles and, like me, found it very moving!
